Extreme Skiing in 1930

Sueoka Ichiro

Description

This digitized and restored footage shot in 1930 by amateur filmmaker Takao Yukawa, a member of the Kobe University ski club, documents skiing in dangerous mountains in the Nagano Prefecture. By using a simple audio track, Sueoka gives the story a subtle sense of suspense. A rare documentation of high-mountain skiing, a phenomenon that (like film) enjoyed widespread popularity in Japan in the 1930s.
