Synopsis

Brazil, the second-largest country of the Americas, where two percent of population own eighty percent of arable land. The northeast of the country is an area suffering from long periods of draught, followed by floods. The average life expectancy there was 27 in 1964. In spite of this, Juan Amaro, his wife and their eleven children settled there, on a deserted farm, to make their living. Six years later, however, only four undernourished children survived. Although they had overcome all previous periods of draught, the latest one, which had lasted for half a year already, would become fatal and the family has only one choice - set out on a journey to the city.
