Matchmaking Mayor Nominated for Slovak Award

Matchmaking Mayor by Erika Hníková, which opened Jihlava IDFF 2010 in world premiere, is among three documentaries nominated for the Slovak Film and Television Academy Award - The Sun in a Net 2012.

The Sun in a Net 2012 2012 will award films made in 2010 and 2011. Out of the 25 competing documentaries, the following films have been nominated for the award: Ilja by Ivan Ostrochovský, Matchmaking Mayor by Erika Hníková and 25 from the 1960s or the Czechoslovak New Wave I and II by Martin Šulík, a two-part film which is part of the Golden Sixties project. The Sun in a Net 2012 awards will be presented at the Slovak National Theatre on April 17.

The documentary film Matchmaking Mayor is set in the Slovak village of Zemplínske Hámre. The determined mayor cares so much about the welfare of the local inhabitants that he plans to make the lonely singles in their thirties into couples. The microcosm of the village is depicted in a great number of portrayed characters and captured situations culminating in a dating ball. The failure of the mayor’s project can be seen both as a metaphor of a wider social problem and a story of an authoritative effort to change the world.
