AFO 47http://www.dokument-festival.com/news-detail/7976%7C0418-afo International documentary Film Festival Fri, 11 May 2012 14:38:24 +0200 Visions of the future, religion from the perspective of science, the anniversary of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the phenomenon of self-mademen; such are the themes of the 47th International Festival of Science Documentary Films Academia Film Olomouc held from 17 to 22 April 2012.

]]>

AFO 47

The main theme of AFO 47 is Visions of the Future – Utopia and Dystopia. The festival provides a sober scientific perspective as well as a plurality of opinion on the threat of the end of the world. It will primarily focus on people‘s diverse notions of the future as well as the concrete visions of future development as seen by present-day science and technology.

This year, 300 years will have passed since the birth of famous French philosopher and one of the first theoreticians of education Jean Jacques Rousseau. Within film screenings, lectures and discussion blocks, AFO 47 will deal with the functioning of contemporary education systems as well as various approaches to the education of children or the phenomenon of gay and lesbian parenting.

Self-made men is a block dedicated to personalities that have transcended the possibilities of their generations thanks to their brilliance and skills. AFO will present the films Bill Gates: How a Geek Changed the World and Steve Jobs: iChanged the World which prove that it is possible to shift any limits imaginable by personal example and maximum involvement; even in a world where individual contribution is gradually disappearing.

Besides the visions of the future of mankind, AFO 47 will focus on another provocative topic; religion from the perspective of science. Is religion a mere product of evolution? Is modern science going to disprove the godly and the supernatural? Such questions will be discussed in a whole range of popular-scientific films, a lecture by Eva Klocová of Masaryk University in Brno and a panel discussion.

If you want to learn more about the programme of AFO 47, please, go to www.afo.cz.

Matchmaking Mayor Nominated for Slovak Awardhttp://www.dokument-festival.com/news-detail/7355%7C0309-nesvatbov-nominated International documentary Film Festival Mon, 12 Mar 2012 16:39:13 +0100 Matchmaking Mayor by Erika Hníková, which opened Jihlava IDFF 2010 in world premiere, is among three documentaries nominated for the Slovak Film and Television Academy Award - The Sun in a Net 2012.

]]>

Matchmaking Mayor Nominated for Slovak Award

The Sun in a Net 2012 2012 will award films made in 2010 and 2011. Out of the 25 competing documentaries, the following films have been nominated for the award: Ilja by Ivan Ostrochovský, Matchmaking Mayor by Erika Hníková and 25 from the 1960s or the Czechoslovak New Wave I and II by Martin Šulík, a two-part film which is part of the Golden Sixties project. The Sun in a Net 2012 awards will be presented at the Slovak National Theatre on April 17.

The documentary film Matchmaking Mayor is set in the Slovak village of Zemplínske Hámre. The determined mayor cares so much about the welfare of the local inhabitants that he plans to make the lonely singles in their thirties into couples. The microcosm of the village is depicted in a great number of portrayed characters and captured situations culminating in a dating ball. The failure of the mayor’s project can be seen both as a metaphor of a wider social problem and a story of an authoritative effort to change the world.

Citizen Havelhttp://www.dokument-festival.com/news-detail/6728%7C1220obcan-havel International documentary Film Festival Sat, 31 Dec 2011 17:26:44 +0100 The unique portrait of former Czech president Václav Havel looks behind the scenes of his presidential period from 1992 to 2003. You can watch the film for free at the DAFilms.com portal.

]]>

Citizen Havel

Begun in 1992 and stemming from a chain of historical events all wedded to the person of Václav Havel, director Pavel Koutecký set out to render a portrait of the first president of Czech Republic. He was given complete freedom to film as he saw it. His ‘direct cinema’ approach captures events in an extremely authentic manner, allowing the viewer to become witness to the birth of a democratic president, to the developing of ideas and decision-making that defines him. After the tragic death of director Pavel Koutecký the film was finished by fellow documentarist Miroslav Janek.

The film will be available at the DAFilms.com portal for free.
