History

Presented projects of last years:

Since 2005, Docu Talents from the East has been a launch pad for a number of documentaries, including Rabbit a la Berlin, Blind Loves, Matchmaking Mayor, The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories, Kites, Cooking History, Rene, Czech Peace, Blockada, Private Universe or Fortress.

Docu Talents aims to draw attention of important film professionals, visiting one of the two A category festivals in the region, to the selection of the best documentary films. We believe that promotion of films from the very initial stages of production or post-production is one of the most efficient tools for advancement.

Each year, festival advisors, distributors, buyers and local as well as international journalists are invited to attend the event. Following the presentation, filmmakers have a chance to meet audiences, festival programmers, distributors and journalists at an informal cocktail party, as well as attend closed consultations with selected film professionals.

Each year, The Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival organizes the presentation of Docu Talents, in cooperation with Karlovy Vary IFF. In 2005-2009 it was co-organized with the Institute of Documentary Film.

The Boundaries of Film

Do not miss the opportunity to join the first film workshop presented by Jihlava IDFF. It is not yet another film festival, but an in-depth and idea-provoking workshop for several dozen participants. Intensive, inspiring, interactive – the first edition of the Boundaries of Film workshop including screenings, lectures, discussions and special bonuses is intended for both film fans and those who want to delve deeper into the world of film.

The Boundaries of Film

Lectures and discussions on non-traditional documentary film formats

The line between fiction and documentary film has always been blurred. Fiction film directly touches upon reality, while the documentary genre oftentimes resorts to the staging of real events. Explore the world of documentary and experimental cinema. Explore the boundaries of film and meet authors of non-traditional TV shows, films and audio-visual works. All workshop participants will have a free unlimited access to films at the DAFilms.cz portal.

Presented by: Tomáš Feřtek (Czech Television programmer), Marek Hovorka (director at Jihlava IDFF), Vít Klusák (director of Czech Dream and Czech Journal), Petr Kubica (creative producer at Czech Television), Robert Sedláček (director of Long Live the Family), Andrea Slováková (experimental film programmer), Kamila Zlatušková (creative producer at Czech Television) and others...

Programme offering a variety of lectures, film clips and discussions.

  • 118 Years of Documentary Film in 118 Minutes

In the course of its history, documentary film has undergone numerous transformations. Our one hundred and eighteen minute long insight into its history will provide an overview of the variety of approaches and aspects of documentary cinematography.

How has documentary film developed and what are its possibilities and methods?

  • Yes, Chef! A Reality Show

Before the launch of the reality show called Yes, Chef!, the Czech culinary reality did not reach far beyond fried cheese and chicken breast with canned peach. Surprisingly, Czech TV opened to a non-traditional format that does not insist on the use of proper language, and the reality itself started to change.

Is the sole purpose of a reality show to be entertaining? Can it also become a fun, albeit vulgar, means of education?

  • The Boundaries of Reality - Docusoaps, Non-Fiction and Semi-Fiction

There are various kinds of documentary films, and there are various kinds of fiction films. Docusoaps, non-fiction films and hybrid forms take us to the boundaries and crossroads of realities.

What are the possibilities of representation of reality?

  • History in Focus – Czech Century, or Staged Reality

Each time a fiction or documentary film records a historical period or event, it reveals much more about its present than about its past.

Reality vs. history, or what is the difference between the recreation of real events and film fiction?

  • Experiments – On the Cutting Edge

Experimental film has developed in parallel with mainstream film. Each experimental and alternative form gradually becomes the standard. And the standard must again be violated and experiments standardized.

Experimental, different, strange, beautiful, fascinating? How to describe experimental film?

  • TV Trends in 21st Century: Biased or Unbiased Documentary?

The traditional concept of documentary film as an unbiased form of journalism is confronted with different approaches.

What is acceptable for a public service broadcaster? Can a public service broadcaster be biased?

  • Dramatic Structure of Documentary Film

Documentary film is created along similar lines as fiction film.

What do documentary and fiction films have in common?

Media cooperation

Everything is still possible.).

VATERS GARTEN – DIE LIEBE MEINER ELTERN

After a long absence, Peter Liechti visits his now elderly parents, ready for a close encounter. The stories of their lives and rather difficult marriage are largely presented as a puppet theatre, with the parents, from the lower middle-class, portrayed as hares wearing shirts and aprons. Via the "Punch" character, the rebellious son channels the emotions that overwhelm him in this stunning portrait.

DOK.Incubator has selected the 2013 participantshttp://www.dokument-festival.com/news-detail/11259%7Cdokincubator International documentary Film Festival Sat, 27 Apr 2013 16:30:35 +0200 This is a workshop where the progress hurts, but actually its 2012 projects start their carrier in the most prestigious festivals

DOK.Incubator has selected the 2013 participants

IDFA, CPH:DOX, DOK Leipzig, MoMA Documentary Fortnight, True / False Festival, Visions du Réel Nyon, Hot Docs, Documentary Edge Auckland, and – most brilliant – the Best Directing Award at SUNDACE 2013, these are the trophies of the films, edited and developed within last year edition.

DOK.Incubator accept only eight feature documentary projects in the rough cut stage to work with them individually for six months on the strongest dramaturgy of the final cut and a clever distribution and marketing strategy. The initiative has just announced this year selection results and the films accepted seem promising… Polish project The Life of a Butterfly by Piotr Bernaś is going to be a movie on a conscious self-destruction of a radical 34 years old rebel, World Champion in fighting. Scottish-Icelandic film 16 Years 'til Summer (by Lou McLoughlan), instead, is an intimate observation of a daily battle of a man returning home after 16 years in prison, for rebuilding his life. Could a humor between father and son help with the responsibilities of a free life?

Other four projects are concerning strong political issues from the most painful wounds of our modern politic map. Russian project SUKHANOV, by Svetlana Strelnikova follows a renowned cardio surgeon, who decides to use own authority to support the Putin autocratic regime… Okhwan, Mission Impossible, by a Slovak director Marek Mackovic, tells the story of a Korean activist who exchanged a possible family life and successful business career for 200 kilometers daily on bike and survived 41 days of hunger strike, 6 hits by cars, 5 times surgery, 4 times malaria to see North and South Korea reunified... The Danish Cooper´s Challenge by Karen Stokkendal Poulsen follows instead the intense talks between Serbia and Kosovo: an ice-queen independence activist vs. a strong macho-ego, none of whom ready to compromise. Another important topic of contemporary post-communistic countries handles Besence Open, a Hungarian film by Kristóf Kovács about a poor village with a Roma majority that win EU funding to build a tennis court… Would this be the opportunity to cooperate all together to build a future for the community?

The broken community of the post-soviet world presents the Czech project Pit-hole, by Jiří Stejskal. The last from the original farms in today´s Kiev, refuses to let the developers to build a fancy district from their home. The last selected project, Romanian Chuck Norris vs. Communism, by Ilinca Calugareanu, is going to be a story about VHS tapes and the fight for freedom during the dying days of Communism in Romania. The humor sometimes can reach the same power as a serious criticism has…

DOK.Incubator starts the first of total three workshop sessions in June in Wroclaw. Among this year´s editing coaches there are Per K. Kirkegaard /DK/, editor of Emmy best editing awarded Armadillo, the Lars von Trier editor Jacob Thuesen /DK/, the most awarded german editor Gesa Marten /DE/ and Wolfgang Widerhofer /AT/, scriptwriter, producer and editor of Nicolaus Geyhalter films. For Polish and Czech documentary film-makers the first workshop is open and they can discuss their projects individually with the tutors.

The deadline of the applications for these individual consultation is May 20th at www.dokincubator.net

TRACES OF ASOCIAL UTOPIA

Film Into Oblivion visits the site of an unfinished railway in the inhospitable Russian taiga. Sixty years ago, thousands lost their lives here, but work was halted soon after Stalin’s death and today all that remains are rusting remains in the swamps. Eyewitness testimony is combined with a meditative boat trip and traces of asocial utopia.
