Festival spot by Jóhann Jóhannsson

"I wanted to create a film using very basic means, a projector with no visual input, beaming light that is refracted and distorted with various reflective materials and filters. Similarly, I filmed an oscilloscope, an instrument that analyzes soundwaves, without the input of sound, so the visuals it produced were formed by its own internal rhythm.

The music was created in much the same way. The beat comes from a reverb and filter effects unit - a machine that normally require the input of an instrument to produce sound. Just like the oscilloscope, we used it without sending sound through it, and the sound we hear is the noise produced by its internal circuits filtered and the effect unit itself is producing the rhythm from its own internal feedback loop."

Taiwanese documentary cinema

As part of the section Transparent Landscape: Taiwan the festival will present over 25 films – including short reportages and botanical time-lapse films from 1930s as well as contemporary testimonies about recent student protests (The 561st Hour of Occupation, 2014).

The historically most comprehensive showcase of Taiwanese documentary cinema will consist of several sections: dedicated to urban and rural impressions, probes into intimate human spheres, and various forms of politically and socially engaged audio-visual production.

“The Taiwanese were thrilled and happy that we in Europe are discovering their documentary art,” says Andrea Slováková, a programmer selecting titles for this special section. “They see it as one of the most distinct expressions of their national and cultural identity.”

This will be the largest retrospective of the country’s documentary cinematography ever presented outside of Taiwan. The screenings of the films will be accompanied by debates with their authors and experts in the field.

Section Fascinations: Psychedelia, under which the cycle is organised, invites viewers to cinematic “experiences more potent than drugs“.

Contribution to World Cinema Award

This year, the Ji.hlava IDFF will host the acclaimed Oscar-winning documentarian Marcel Ophuls. In his feature-length films, Ophuls looks back on the era of German Nazi regime, its brutal oppression, but also explores the issues of conscience and responsibility. The festival will showcase his acclaimed films The Sorrow and Pity and Hôtel Terminus, as well as a lesser-known documentary focusing on the Munich Treaty, Munich or Peace in our Time.

Marcel Ophuls will accept the Contribution to World Cinema Award at the festival's closing ceremony on October 28, three days before his 90th birthday.

Visual of the 21st Ji.hlava IDFF unveiled

The poster for the 21st Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, which will take place from October 24th to 29th, depicts a myriad of blended images. In his traditional poem to accompany the poster visual artist Juraj Horvath writes: “This year’s Ji.hlava is seemingly abstract,” also mentioning “extracted shots, hasty concluding thoughts”. The poster was unveiled on Monday, June 26, at the Nonstrop Gallery in Jihlava, by the film festival’s executive director Katarína Holubcová. Both she and Juraj Horvath went on to add that they are “waiting for you at the cinema.”

ji.hlava 2017
image after image
hazy images in layers
Hup, two, three, four…
stop counting,
marching.
reflected reflections
segments within segments
extracted shots,
hasty concluding thoughts,
mythology compressed in onslaughts.
stand at attention,
a state in tension,
I’m waiting for you
at the cinema.

This year’s Ji.hlava is seemingly abstract,
but something is different.
Somewhat askew.
Images emerge from the dark.
Empty plans.
Multiple screens ready for action.

Juraj Horváth

Every year the poster provides a hint of the upcoming festival’s mood and focus, with the latest version reflecting the sense of intermingled film images. “The poster beautifully shows how individual shots are transformed as one follows another. In much the same way that colors change when they are mixed, shots edited into a sequence also take on new meanings,” says Holubcová about the festival’s new design. She goes on to add, “… and this applies, for instance, to the films screened at our festival as well as to the images that surround us all – morning, noon, and night.”

However, a film shot does not only lead to questions about what it shows, but also about what it does not show. “Filming a shot is subject to rules, to what is considered customary, and to final intentions. For example, the golden ratio, the desire to capture attention, or the longing to have emotional impact. In all cases, that which remains outside the shot remains unsaid,” according to Holubcová.

“And when Juraj Horváth playfully mentions ‘extracted shots, hasty concluding thoughts’, I would like to add that today we need documentary film more than ever before. As has been demonstrated by the recent news about the possible manipulation of the election in the USA, numerous cyberattacks, and the intentional dissemination of untruths and half-truths (not only on the Internet), documentaries are a way in which viewers can obtain sufficient information to reach their own conclusions. These are specifically the types of films that Ji.hlava has always striven to find. And we will continue in this endeavor even during the next decade,” concludes Holubcová reassuringly.
