Achievements of Emerging Producers

Two of Ji.hlava's Emerging Producers – Bianca Oana (EP 2017 from Romania) and Radovan Síbrt (EP 2015 from the Czech Republic) teamed up to co-produce Touch Me Not directed by Adina Pintilie, a title selected for the competition at Berlinale. Radovan is also behind Jan Gebert’s When the War Comes, which will open the Panorama Dokumente section in Berlin. Films premiered at the Panorama section will also include Alina Skrzeszewska’s Game Girls produced by Jean-Laurent Csinidis (EP 2017 from France).

IFF Rotterdam recently world-premiered Djon África by Filipa Reis (EP 2017 from Portugal) in its main competition, and Poisonous Roses produced by Karim Aitouna (EP 2014 from France) in the Bright Future section. Karim is also the producer of Noiseless, Desert Extras, which had its European premiere at last year’s Ji.hlava IDFF, and the film was now selected for The Museum of Modern Art’s prestigious Doc Fortnight 2018.

There are more great news about our producers coming from overseas: After collecting the 2017 European Film Awards and winning Palme d’Or, The Square produced by Katja Adomeit (EP 2013 from Denmark) was nominated also for the Oscars, and Josephine Forero (EP 2015 from Colombia) produced HOME - the Country of Illusion, which was nominated for Best Documentary at the Colombian National Film Prizes.

As of today, the Emerging Producers list includes 111 names from 38 countries, many of whom have already firmly established themselves on the documentary scene since the launch of the programme in 2012.

The Call for Emerging Producers 2019 has already been announced and the deadline for submissions is March 31. The programme will take place during the 22nd Ji.hlava IDFF on October 25-30, 2018 and in Berlin in February 2019.

Festival spot by Jóhann Jóhannsson

"I wanted to create a film using very basic means, a projector with no visual input, beaming light that is refracted and distorted with various reflective materials and filters. Similarly, I filmed an oscilloscope, an instrument that analyzes soundwaves, without the input of sound, so the visuals it produced were formed by its own internal rhythm.

The music was created in much the same way. The beat comes from a reverb and filter effects unit - a machine that normally require the input of an instrument to produce sound. Just like the oscilloscope, we used it without sending sound through it, and the sound we hear is the noise produced by its internal circuits filtered and the effect unit itself is producing the rhythm from its own internal feedback loop."
